COSTA MESA : Mesa Verde Library to Get Roof Repairs

Share

The Mesa Verde Library’s leaky roof held up under strong rains Monday, and could be repaired on Friday when the library is closed, said branch Manager Gladys Lorenzo.

The City Council voted unanimously this week to pay for emergency roof repairs, estimated to cost between $24,000 and $30,000.

A leak was discovered two weeks ago when a patron pulled a soggy technical book off the reference shelf. Library staff later found that more than a dozen books, all out of print, had been destroyed by water, Lorenzo said.

Workers placed a temporary patch on the roof and covered bookshelves with plastic. “It’s been holding, but we’re not going to take the plastic off,” Lorenzo said. “I hope it gets done before we get another big leak.”

The library, at 2969 Mesa Verde Drive East, is operated by the county, although the city owns and maintains the buildings. Lorenzo said about 500 people use the library each day, and more than 10,000 books are checked out from the library each month.

The library had to reduce its operation last July from 59 hours weekly to 29 hours weekly because of county budget cuts.
