Oil residue in a waste-water area caught fire at the Unocal Refinery on Tuesday, injuring three workers, fire officials said.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Brian Jordan said the fire sent a black cloud of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles. The fire in the 30-by-100-foot area was extinguished by 40 firefighters in about 30 minutes, Jordan said.

Three workers were treated for minor injuries at Bay Harbor Hospital in Harbor City.

One worker’s helmet caught fire, but he was able to get it off before he was seriously hurt, Jordan said, adding, “He was pretty lucky.”
