Yankees Make Deal for Mulholland

Left-handed pitcher Terry Mulholland, who had a 12-9 record last season as the Philadelphia Phillies won the National League pennant, was traded with a player to be named to the New York Yankees Wednesday for pitcher Bobby Munoz and two minor leaguers.

Mulholland, 30, had a 3.25 earned-run average in 28 starts and one relief appearance for the Phillies last season. He was 1-0 in the World Series, winning the second game, 6-4.

Munoz, 25, was 3-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 38 relief appearances for the Yankees.

The Angels invited minor league left-hander Andrew Lorraine to spring training.

Lorraine, a fourth-round draft choice from Stanford last summer, was 1-2 with a 2.51 ERA, yielding 20 hits and striking out 16 in 28 innings for La Guaira of the Venezuelan League in winter baseball. He was 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA in six starts in Class-A Boise last summer.

Former Baltimore Oriole and Houston Astro first baseman Glenn Davis has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets. . . . Outfielder Moises Alou and the Montreal Expos agreed on a $1.4-million, one-year contract. . . . Third baseman Charlie Hayes and the Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration, agreeing on a one-year contract worth about $3 million.

A Victoria County (Tex.) grand jury declined to bring sexual-assault charges against Atlanta Braves left fielder Ron Gant and his cousin, who were accused of having sex with two underage teen-age girls on Christmas Eve.

Linebacker Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers agreed to a contract that makes him the NFL’s second highest-paid defensive player at what sources say is $16.3 million over four years. Green Bay’s Reggie White signed a $17-million, four-year deal last season.

Sean Elliott, the Detroit Piston forward whose kidney ailment scuttled a trade to the Houston Rockets, said he will take an indefinite leave of absence.

Michigan players Jimmy King, Ray Jackson and Chris Fields, caught on videotape stealing beer from a convenience store last month, pleaded no contest to retail fraud and will perform community service.

Guard Gary Payton of the Seattle SuperSonics was chosen to replace injured Charles Barkley of the Phoenix Suns on the Western Conference team for the NBA All-Star game Sunday in Minneapolis.

A group trying to land an NBA expansion franchise in Vancouver reached agreement with the British Columbia government to remove basketball betting from the province’s lottery.
