Ex-Athletic Director Balak Dies

John Balak, a former San Clemente High School athletic director who recently devoted much time to St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, died Monday of an apparent heart attack, it was announced Wednesday.

His death at age 52 stunned members of the St. Margaret’s school community, where Balak was an active and beloved member.

School officials recalled Wednesday he could be seen nearly every day on campus, wearing white overalls as he tirelessly shared his talent as a carpenter.

The Dana Point resident and his family, including two young daughters, went to almost every sporting event at the school, and Balak had recently agreed to coach the school’s track team.

“There isn’t anyone who in one way or another wasn’t affected by John,” Pastor Mike Wallens said. “He was always talking with the students. He would always strike up a conversation with people. He loved the school.”

Born in Arcadia on May 17, 1941, Balak attended St. Francis School, where he played baseball and basketball. He attended St. John’s Seminary and later graduated from Loyola College. He taught English, Latin and reading at San Clemente High School for several years. He also coached several sports and served for a time as the school’s athletic director.

Balak started a construction business during his teaching years, which eventually became a full-time job.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Joyce, a secretary at St. Margaret’s; daughters Marissa, 11 and Mara, 9; and two step-children, Mark, 29, and Megan, 24.

A memorial service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, 31641 La Novia in San Juan Capistrano. A memorial Mass will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 25001 Nueva Vista Drive in Laguna Niguel.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to St. Margaret’s Episcopal School for “The John Balak Memorial Athletic Fund” and “The Balak Family Educational Fund” at 31641 La Novia, San Juan Capistrano, Calif. 92675.
