Pembroke Posts $29.40 Upset in U.S Debut
Pembroke, who had campaigned in Britain, won his U.S. debut Wednesday, coming from just off the pace to win the $64,400 turf feature at Santa Anita.
A 14-1 shot ridden by Alex Solis, Pembroke finished one length in front of D’Hallevant, with Portoferraio another 3 1/2 lengths behind. Didyme, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth.
Pembroke, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred colt by Gone West, carried 114 pounds and was clocked in 1:13 3-5 for the 6 1/2 furlongs.
The winner paid $29.40, $12.40 and $8. D’Hallevant, ridden by Corey Nakatani and carrying 113, paid $5.80 and $4.40. Portoferraio, an Argentine-bred runner ridden by Pat Valenzuela and carrying 121, paid $6.80.
It was the fourth win in nine career starts for Pembroke.
