Times Aids CSUN Journalism Efforts

The Los Angeles Times Valley Edition has donated $23,000 to the quake-damaged journalism department at Cal State Northridge for replacement of the student publications’ computer system, Valley Edition President Jeffrey S. Klein announced Friday.

Klein said that while the publications are in temporary quarters, the new system can serve students who work on the Daily Sundial newspaper, reporters for public radio station KCSN-FM, and writers for CSUN’s weekly cable news program, Valley View.

The equipment--including a Macintosh Quadra 605 and 650 fileserver and an Apple 360 Laserprinter--can then be integrated into a larger system when the publications move back into their permanent building, Klein said.

In a letter to CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson that accompanied the check, Klein noted that no institution experienced more financial loss than CSUN.

“We remain committed to the community, to CSUN (the alma mater of many Times employees) and especially to supporting quality journalism programs and university newspapers like the Daily Sundial,” Klein wrote.
