NHL ROUNDUP : Hextall Gets Mad, Then Gets Even

Ron Hextall served notice before the opening faceoff that he was taking nothing from anybody, jawing with Philadelphia Flyer forward Claude Boivin at center ice.

Philadelphia’s Dave Brown came over.

New York’s Mick Vukota followed, and suddenly all 40 players were against the boards.

That done, Hextall took the rest of the evening personally.

He stopped 23 shots in his third consecutive shutout at Uniondale, N.Y., where the Islanders beat Philadelphia, 2-0.

With a streak of exactly 207 minutes, the Islanders broke their home shutout streak of 138:18, set in February of 1980.

“I think Hexy was involved in something like that in warm-ups before with the Flyers,” Vukota said. “The players are subject to a $25,000 fine, and since I’ve already had my quota for the year, I was glad to get out of there.”

Vukota was suspended earlier this season and fined $10,000 for coming off the bench during a fight.

Scott Lachance scored in the first period for New York and Pierre Turgeon in the second.

“Give Hextall credit,” Philadelphia defenseman Gary Galley said. “He made some big stops. Every now and then, you hit a goalie playing like that. It was a big game, and he came up big.”

Chicago 3, Buffalo 1--Rich Sutter scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in a three-minute stretch of the second period to lift the Blackhawks at Buffalo.

Jeremy Roenick extended his goal-scoring streak to four games for Chicago.

Boston 7, Winnipeg 6--Bryan Smolinski and Cam Neely each scored twice at Winnipeg, as the Bruins handed the Jets their club-record tying 10th consecutive loss.

The loss extended Winnipeg’s winless streak to 18 games (0-16-2).

Boston is 4-1-1 on its current seven-game trip.
