The New York Rangers became the first NHL team to win 40 games this season with a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia Monday night in New York.

Winning goaltender Mike Richter, who earned his 100th NHL victory, made 25 saves and was only beaten by Mikael Renberg’s fluke goal with 6:11 left in the game. Renberg’s turnaround wrist shot deflected off Ranger defenseman Jeff Beukeboom and bounced into the net.

Winnipeg 3, San Jose 3--Alexei Zhamnov’s power-play goal with 9:11 left in the third period at Winnipeg enabled the Jets to tie the Sharks and end a club-record 10-game losing streak. But the Jets are still winless in their last 19 games (0-16-3).
