OUTLOOK
Two years ago, Howard used mostly sophomores and freshmen and suffered through a 5-18-1 season. It paid off last season. The Panthers were co-champions with Santa Ana Valley and reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Section IV-A playoffs. Almost everyone is back, so they are certainly league favorites. Archuleta was the league MVP last season. He is a solid hitter and fast. Estrada, Mantranga and Maresh were first-team all-league picks. The entire infield is back, as is Garza at catcher. The only concerns, and they are minimal, are Gonzales and Harris, who are on the basketball team that reached the playoffs. They might need time to get ready. Still, there are plenty of other arms around.
