OUTLOOK

Mott, the son of long-time Vanguard Coach Don Mott, takes over this season. El Modena was within a victory of qualifying for the playoffs. The Vanguards should be in the running again this year, as they have two experienced pitchers. Hanson and May have been on the varsity since they were sophomores. Hanson was 6-2 and May 4-5 last season. “We’re going to count heavily on those two,” Mott said. “Our pitching will be strong. It will all depend on how we do some of the little things.” Such as hit. Gross led the team last season, batting better than .400, but most of the young batters will need time to develop. Only four seniors were on the varsity last season. “I don’t think hitting will be a problem,” Mott said. “But we’re going to have to do things like bunt and hit and run. I told our kids, if we’re in the game going into the seventh inning, we have a chance because of our pitching.”
