Fischer Clears 7-3 to Set Record

Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo High, the runner-up in the high jump in last year’s state track and field championships, cleared a Ventura County record 7 feet 3 inches in a season opening meet against Ventura on Wednesday.

Fischer, a 5-foot-9 senior who has made a commitment to Wisconsin, cleared the height on his second attempt, then stopped jumping in order to conserve his energy for Saturday’s Spartan Relays at Rio Mesa High.

“His first attempt (at 7-3) was excellent, but he stalled out on top of the bar,” Camarillo Coach Dennis Riedmiller said. “He knew he had it the second time, though. He was halfway over the bar and he yelled, ‘Yeah!’ ”

Fischer cleared 6-4 and 6-8 on his first attempts and 7 feet on his second after winning the long jump at 21-11 1/2.

His 7-3 effort is the top high school mark in the nation this year and moves him into a tie for second on the all-time region list and into a tie for 13th on the all-time national list. Fischer and Ken Burke of Westlake (1985) previously shared the Ventura County record of 7-2.

Led by Fischer and Eleazar Hernandez, winner of the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Camarillo defeated Ventura, 76-61.

Ramsey Jay led Ventura with victories in the 100 (10.9 seconds), 200 (22.0) and 400 (49.7) meters. He also anchored the victorious 400 relay team (43.7).
