COLLEGE BASKETBALL / PAC-10 ROUNDUP : Arizona Gets Its Share of Another Title

Washington State got cold when Arizona got hot, and the Wildcats used second-half shooting for an 85-69 victory that earned them at least a share of a fifth consecutive Pacific 10 Conference championship.

The Cougars (18-10, 8-8) led, 35-30, at halftime Saturday at Tucson and were behind only 54-52 with 11:34 to play.

Then, “when it got down to the final minutes, we hit our shots and they didn’t,” Arizona Coach Lute Olson said.

Chief among those hitting shots was Khalid Reeves, who scored 21 second-half points. He had plenty of help. Damon Stoudamire had 10 of his 25 points, Joseph Blair 10 of his 18 and Reggie Geary all seven of his points in the second half for Arizona (25-4, 14-3), which has won eight in a row.

Nathan Erdmann led Washington State with 19 points.

Arizona can win the Pac-10 title outright next Saturday at Arizona State.

No. 20 California 74, Oregon State 44--Lamond Murray had 18 points and broke the Bears’ single-season scoring record.

The crowd at the Oakland Coliseum Arena saluted Murray, a junior, and sophomore Jason Kidd with “one more year, one more year” as they left the game. Neither spent much time on the court after Cal (21-6, 12-4) opened a 37-10 halftime lead.

Murray’s 651 points beat the old mark of 649 set in 1989 by Leonard Taylor.

Oregon State (6-19, 2-14) has lost six in a row and 11 of 12 and is 0-10 away from home, its first winless road season since 1950.

Kidd, suffering from a stomach virus, played only 15 minutes and scored two points with five assists. He did not start.

Arizona State 73, Washington 55--Mario Bennett scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Sun Devils at Tempe.

The victory assured Arizona State (14-12, 9-8) its fourth consecutive winning season under Coach Bill Frieder. Washington is 5-20, 3-13.

Stanford 84, Oregon 76--Brent Williams scored 24 points to lead the Cardinal (16-9, 9-7) at Palo Alto.
