COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Robinson Lifts Purdue to the Top of Big Ten

Glenn Robinson capped yet another great performance with a driving jumper from just inside the foul line with 6.5 seconds left Sunday to give No. 9 Purdue a 95-94 victory over No. 3 Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The victory moved the Boilermakers (25-4, 13-4) into first place in the Big Ten.

Robinson, a junior forward who leads the nation in scoring, finished with 37 points.

Purdue trailed, 94-87, with 1:37 to play before going on an 8-0 run that was capped by Robinson’s big basket. Robinson, who came in averaging 29.4 points per game, spun past Jalen Rose to get the shot off.

Michigan (20-6, 12-4) would have clinched a tie for the conference title with a victory.

Cuonzo Martin, who had 21 points for Purdue, made four three-pointers in the second half. Purdue made 12 of 25 three-pointers in the game.

Ohio State 82, No. 17 Indiana 78--Lawrence Funderburke, a transfer from Indiana, scored 25 points and the Buckeyes battled back from an 18-point first-half deficit to upset the Hoosiers at Columbus, Ohio.

The Hoosiers (18-7, 11-5) are now 1 1/2 games back of Big Ten leader Purdue.

Ohio State (12-15, 5-11) had lost its last two games, five of its last six and eight of 10.

No. 13 Kansas 84, Oklahoma 81--The Jayhawks got strong second-half play from Steve Woodberry and Richard Scott to beat the Sooners in a Big Eight game at Norman, Okla.

Scott scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half. Woodberry finished with 21 and hit two big three-pointers as the Jayhawks (24-6, 9-5) overcame an 11-point deficit.

Oklahoma (15-11, 6-8) lost to Kansas for the seventh time in eight games. Jeff Webster scored 30 points for the Sooners.

No. 14 Syracuse 81, Georgetown 75--Lawrence Moten scored 26 points to lead the Orangemen to a Big East victory at Syracuse.

Adrian Autry, who had 21 points, and Moten each made a pair of free throws in the final eight seconds to seal the victory, which gave the Orangemen (21-5, 13-5) sole possession of second place in the conference.

Georgetown (16-9, 10-7) was led by Othella Harrington, who scored 19 points.

No. 25 Penn 81, Cornell 66--Matt Maloney led the Quakers (23-2, 13-0) to their 28th consecutive Ivy League victory and second Ivy title in a row. Maloney made four of five three-pointers and scored 19 points at Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell fell to 8-17, 3-10.

TOURNAMENTS

Massachusetts, which lost to St. Joseph’s earlier in the season, made sure it didn’t happen again, building a 26-point first-half lead on its way to a 74-58 victory in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament at Philadelphia. Lou Roe had 23 points and nine rebounds for No. 11 UMass (26-5), which faces Duquesne in today’s semifinals. . . . Eddie Jones scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had four steals as No. 12 Temple easily defeated Rutgers, 58-44, in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Temple (21-6) faces George Washington today. . . . Tom Pipkins scored 23 points as Duquesne (16-11, 9-8) defeated West Virginia, 70-68. West Virginia (16-11, 8-9) had 18 turnovers.

Tennessee Chattanooga (23-6) qualified for the NCAA tournament by rallying to defeat Davidson, 65-64, at Asheville, N.C., in the championship game of the Southland Conference tournament. Chad Copeland, who scored 21 points, made the key shot, a driving layup with 1:58 left. . . . Rider (21-8) earned its second consecutive NCAA tournament berth by winning the Northeast Conference tournament at Lawrenceville, N.J., with a 62-56 victory over Monmouth (18-11). Freshman Charles Smith led Rider with 20 points. . . . Michael Allen scored 27 points as Southwestern Louisiana (21-7) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final nine minutes to record a 59-55 victory over New Orleans (19-9) in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament at Bowling Green, Ky.
