Rick Barry, who took a coaching job in the Continental Basketball Assn., has been fired by the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Fury following a 12-game losing streak.

He was replaced on an interim basis by Clifford Ray, who played with Barry on Golden State when the Warriors won the NBA title in 1975.

Barry, an eight-time NBA all-star, was hired by Fort Wayne on Jan. 25, 1993. Before that, he coached at Cedar Rapids in the Global Basketball Assn., but that league folded in December 1992.

The Modesto Invitational track meet’s 52-year run is over. Citing declining attendance and rising costs, Tri Valley Growers, the meet’s major sponsor, cut off financial support last week. As a result, the May 14 meet was abandoned. The Modesto meet started in 1942 as the Northern California Relays and later was known as the California Relays. Tri Valley Growers, the parent of S&W; Foods, assumed sponsorship of the meet in 1983.

East German sports authorities gave banned performance-enhancing drugs to athletes under age 14, said Manfred Kittlaus, the head of a special agency investigating crimes in the former Communist state. Kittlaus refused to estimate how many young athletes were given the drugs, which he said included anabolic steroids.

A back injury could prevent defending champion Fred Couples from playing in this week’s Honda Classic at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Larry Holmes, 44, will fight Garing Lane in a scheduled 10-round fight tonight at Ledyard, Conn. Holmes (59-4, 40 knockouts) will earn $210,000 from the fight with Lane (11-10-1, five knockouts).
