Gas Shut-Off Valves

Share

* The recent newscasts showing home and mobile home fires fed by gas from gas pipes broken by the earthquake remind me that over a year ago we installed gas valves that automatically shut off during earthquakes, in buildings with 160 apartments, at a cost of thousands of dollars, for both tenant and owner protection.

Unfortunately, the Southern California Gas Co. insisted that these valves be removed, claiming that the Gas Co. would control gas fires from a central station. It’s too bad the Gas Co. didn’t act to save many of the recently burned homes.

Maybe the Gas Co., with the experience of the recent earthquake, should review this policy and be more concerned about public safety.
