Pipe Bomb Rips Hole in Store Roof

A pipe bomb discovered at a grocery store blew up Friday as police attempted to remove it, injuring no one but blasting a hole in the roof, police said.

The bomb was discovered on the roof after a man telephoned the store and said the business was about to be blown up.

“Your store is going to blow up at any minute,” the caller told the shop owner about 9 a.m., Sgt. Ken Johnson said.

Shops within two to three blocks of the market in the 7100 block of Foothill Boulevard were evacuated and traffic was diverted before the device exploded at 3:30 p.m., more than three hours after it was discovered, Johnson said.

The homemade bomb was more than a foot long, police said. The explosion created a hole in the roof the size of an air conditioner.

The caller made no demands. Police have no suspects.
