COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Pound 16 Hits to Beat Grand Canyon

Top-ranked Cal State Fullerton used 16 hits and took advantage of five errors by Grand Canyon to post a 13-2 baseball victory Saturday at Titan Field.

Fullerton (17-4) was led by junior second baseman Jeff Ferguson, who had three hits, including a two-run homer in the second and three runs batted in. Teammate Brian King added three hits and two RBIs.

Pitcher Chad Rolish struck out eight in six innings, giving up six hits. Jon Ward earned his first save for the Titans.

Grand Canyon (15-8-1) was led by Andrew McCormick, who went four for four with one RBI.

The teams will conclude the series at 1 p.m. today.

The Titans currently are ranked second in the nation by Baseball America and first in Collegiate Baseball and USA Today Baseball Weekly.

In Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball:

Westmont 10-7, Southern California 9-4--In the first game, Jason Brissey was three for five with two RBIs for Southern California (6-14, 0-5). Brett Bigert had three hits and three RBIs for Westmont (10-7, 3-2), including the game-winning single.

In the second game, Ryan Siedel had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Brent Tucker went two for three with two RBIs for Westmont.

In nonconference baseball:

Claremont-Mudd 5, Chapman 1--The Panthers’ three-game winning streak ended. Chapman (4-13) scored its only run in the first inning on Donny Disbro’s RBI single. Claremont is 7-7.

In Big West Conference softball:

UNLV 5, Fullerton 0--Heidi Robertson went four for four in the first game with a double and one run scored for Fullerton (7-13, 1-3). Amie Stewart won both games for UNLV (14-5, 7-1) to improve to 8-2.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Cal Baptist 8-3, Concordia 6-1--Concordia (5-13, 2-3) rallied to tie the first game with two runs in the seventh inning, but Cal Baptist answered with two in the eighth. Roberto Singer had four RBIs for Cal Baptist (5-10-1, 4-1).

Southern California College 12-3, Concordia 0-0--Beth Howard (8-1)) has pitched 42 consecutive scoreless innings--six consecutive shutouts--for Southern California College (14-4, 3-1). In the two games, Angie Vega had three hits, with two triples, four RBIs and three runs scored. Concordia is 3-7, 0-4.

In nonconference women’s gymnastics:

CS Fullerton 191.45, Illinois State 186.1--CS Fullerton’s Celeste Delia had the top score in the vault and uneven bars and captured the all-around with a total of 38.825. Cristi Clifford won the floor exercise and finished behind Delia in the all-around with 38.675 points for the Titans (5-5).

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 1--Chris Tontz, ranked 24th in the Western region, led UC Irvine (5-6, 2-1) with a 6-2, 6-3 sweep over Laslo Markovitz.
