HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Alemany Tops Buena for Title

Alemany High converted a single, a wild pitch and three errors into a three-run third inning and held on to win, 5-3, over Buena in the Blue Division championship game of the Westside tournament Saturday at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Greg Kmet (2-0) gave up eight hits, struck out six and walked two in six innings for Alemany (4-1), and Fred Perez picked up his second save by retiring the three batters he faced in the seventh.

In other Westside tournament games:

Hart 8, St. Bernard 6--The visiting Indians scored four runs in the top of the seventh to win the championship of the Red Division at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Brian Baron scored the tying run on a passed ball and Louis Sanchez scored the go-ahead run on a single.

Rio Mesa 13, Bishop Montgomery 6--Manny Perez and Johnny Espinoza had two-run singles during a seven-run first inning in a game at Rio Mesa.

Espinoza also had a two-run homer in the fourth. Brian Normington drove in three runs with a bases-loaded walk in the first and a two-run single in the fifth.

Sylmar 9, Harvard-Westlake 8--Art Diaz went four for four with three doubles and three runs batted in for Sylmar (3-2).

The teams combined for 28 hits, including 10 doubles.

Saugus 8, Ventura 3--Danny Cato (three for four, two RBIs, three runs) and Jarrod Brusman (three for three, two runs) led host Saugus (3-2).

Chatsworth 6, Chaminade 5--Mike Amado singled in Rod Darayabigi with two out in the seventh as host Chatsworth escaped. Chaminade walked 12. Adam Crecion doubled twice for Chaminade.

Taft 7, Canyon 5--Nick Andrisano had three hits and drove in Mike Ferguson with the winning run at Taft. Dave Helman added two hits for the Toreadors.

Notre Dame 15, Hueneme 1--Jon Lichterman hit for the cycle, driving in two runs and scoring three, and Justin Bunch and Edgar Nava each added two hits for host Notre Dame (4-1). Rich Igou (1-1) allowed two hits over six innings.

Montclair Prep 7, Camarillo 3--Montclair Prep (4-1) scored six runs in the seventh at Camarillo. Mitch Hyatt doubled to score Aaron Mintz with the winning run.

Channel Islands 18, Oxnard 4--Tony De La Torre went three for four and drove in two runs and Damon Espinoza was two for three with three RBIs to lead Channel Islands (3-2).

In the El Segundo tournament:

Long Beach Wilson 7, Westlake 2--Joe Paganelli went two for three and Kevin McClure hit his first home run for the Warriors (3-2) in the seventh-place game.

Burroughs 6, South Torrance 4--Senior catcher Mike Delgado hit his first home run and had two RBIs for Burroughs (3-2) in the fifth-place game. Chris Centento and Josh Cartee each went two for three for the Indians.

Crespi 16, Westminster 2--Sophomore pitcher Chris Hebert (1-0) struck out three and walked one to lead Crespi (4-0-1) to the consolation championship.

Brad Wright was three for six, including his first home run, for Crespi and Mike Glendenning doubled, tripled and singled.

In the L.A. Invitational:

Verdugo Hills 7, Grant 3--Senior right-hander Eric Schmidt (1-0) pitched a six-hitter for Verdugo Hills. Abe Ortez and Bryan Fannon hit back-to-back home runs.

North Hollywood 9, Van Nuys 1--Pat Fields and Mike Delano combined on a three-hitter and 14 strikeouts to lead the Huskies (9-1). Otoniel Flores had two hits and two RBIs for North Hollywood.

In nonleague games:

Thousand Oaks 6-5, Lompoc 0-9--Sophomore left-hander Micah Weathers (1-0) allowed four hits over six innings, striking out three for Thousand Oaks in the opener of a nonleague doubleheader at Lompoc. Jason Earles led the Lancers (2-2) with four runs and four steals in the two games.

San Marcos 11-1, St. Francis 4-3--St. Francis pitchers gave up 11 walks in the first game, but Paul Diaz and Richie McCoppin combined for 14 strikeouts in the second game for the Golden Knights. Danny Phillips (two for three) and Sean Martin (two for five) scored in the 13th for St. Francis in the second game.

Calabasas 2-8, Agoura 1-2--Josh Morton tossed a four-hitter, struck out 11 and drove in the decisive run with a solo home run in the opener at Calabasas.

Quartz Hill 5-3, Barstow 0-1--Roger Worley struck out 12 and pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game and four pitchers held Barstow to one run in the second game at Quartz Hill. Darrell Hussman had two RBIs in the first game.

St. Genevieve 9-0, St. Bonaventure 7-12--In the second game, senior left-hander Brad Burnett (2-0) threw a one-hitter, striking out 11, for host St. Bonaventure (3-2). In the first game, Omar Gutierrez was four for five with four RBIs to lead St. Genevieve.

TRACK & FIELD

Northridge-Alemany Relays--Hurdlers Danny Haag of Granada Hills and Cathy Prater of Agoura turned in the top marks by local athletes in the meet at CSUN.

Haag was victorious in the 110-meter highs and the 300 intermediates, running a wind-aided 14.88 seconds in the former and a personal best of 39.13 in the latter.

Prater ran 44.6 to finish second in the 300 low hurdles and timed a wind-aided 15.40 to place third in the 100 highs.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 2, San Marcos 1--Jessica Cunningham’s 10th-inning single drove in Debbie Hatfield to lift host Simi Valley (6-0) to the title of its own tournament. Sara Griffin (4-0) earned MVP honors by tossing a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts, and getting two hits and two stolen bases.
