GOLF ROUNDUP : Price Still the Hottest Despite Daly’s Rally

John Daly, playing his first PGA tournament since his November suspension, made a startling run in the Honda Classic on Sunday at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., before finishing four strokes behind golf’s hottest player--Nick Price.

Price shot a five-under-par 66 to win by one stroke. It was his seventh international victory in less than 12 months. Price’s 276 total, eight-under, left Craig Parry one back. Parry had a closing 67.

Despite his great play, Price doesn’t consider himself the best in the world yet.

“I’m probably in the top three or four,” he said. “But to be No. 1 in the world, well, you have to have some majors in there.”

Daly, the PGA’s longest hitter and one of the game’s big draws, closed within two strokes of the lead with a three-under 68 and finished in a fourth-place tie.

“If I had a hat on, I’d take my hat off to myself,” Daly said.

Brandel Chamblee, who led or shared the lead through the first three rounds, birdied the last hole to match par 71 and was third--his career-best finish--at 278.

Daly was tied at 280 with Masters champion Bernhard Langer of Germany, Davis Love III and Curtis Strange.

Jim Albus shot a one-over-par 73, but maintained his wire-to-wire lead and won the Vantage at The Dominion PGA Seniors tournament at San Antonio.

Albus finished at eight-under-par 208 to win his third Senior Tour event, his first since the 1993 GTE Suncoast Classic.

He finished one shot ahead of two-time tournament champion Lee Trevino, Graham Marsh of Australia and George Archer.

Donna Andrews, who carried a three-shot lead into the final round of the Ping-Welch’s Championship, survived a one-over-par 73 at Tucson, finishing at 12-under 276 to defeat Judy Dickinson and 1992 champion Brandie Burton by three shots.

Dickinson carded a 68--a spectacular performance amid the problems created by 25- to 35-m.p.h. gusts--but couldn’t make up an eight-shot deficit.
