Two men shot at a party in El Rio over the weekend remained hospitalized Monday, one in serious condition, authorities said.

Victor Carrillo, 22, of Santa Paula was in the intensive care unit of St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, a spokeswoman said. Sergio Martinez, 19, of Oxnard was listed in good condition at the same hospital.

Both were shot about 11 p.m. Saturday during a birthday party in the 1000 block of Salem Avenue. According to the Sheriff’s Department, two men in a heated argument were wrestling over a semiautomatic handgun when shots were fired into a crowd, wounding Carrillo and Martinez.

“There was a verbal argument and some shoving and then this thing occurred,” Sheriff’s Detective Raul Munoz said.

When deputies arrived, most of the people at the party had scattered, Munoz said.

Investigators are trying to identify the two men who had the gun. No arrests had been made by late Monday.
