BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : McDowell Pitches Strong 5 Innings
American League Cy Young Award winner Jack McDowell, scratched from his previous start because of back spasms, pitched five innings to lead the Chicago White Sox over the New York Yankees, 6-5.
McDowell struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in his second spring start. He allowed only one run, on a wild pitch with Danny Tartabull on third in the fourth inning.

Designated hitter Dave Winfield played for the first time since taking a pitch in the ribs last week and homered in the fourth inning of the Minnesota Twins’ 3-0 victory over the Texas Rangers. . . . The Milwaukee Brewers’ oft-injured starter Ted Higuera pitched five shutout innings of a 6-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics and has a 1.54 ERA in three starts.
