If Catfish Could Read, They’d Hide

George Baker has surfaced, so it must be catfish season.

The Los Angeles resident was at Lake Piru in Ventura County last weekend and, sure enough, landed 10 catfish totaling 86 pounds, the largest an 18-pounder.

“When people read his name in the paper, they know the catfish are going to start biting again,” said Art Caldara, lake manager. “A lot of people buy the paper just for that.”

Elsewhere in the Southland, the whiskered fish are slowly moving into the warmer shallows to feed, a sure sign of spring.
