EDUCATION : Peninsula High: Latin Festival

Share

At Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, the ancient language of Latin is anything but dead.

About 165 students study the language, and the school has one of the largest Latin clubs in the United States.

Enthusiasm for the language and Latin history, music and art will be shared by about 1,200 people Friday and Saturday when students from throughout the state gather at the school for the 39th Annual California Junior Classical League Convention.

It will be the first time the high school has held the event since its inauguration in 1955. Organization has taken a year, but the work has been worth it, said teachers McNir Maxwell, Denali Poliakoff and Rosalind Harper.

Maxwell said the convention is a mixture of academic and sport competition with recreational activities. Events include certamen (a quiz game similar to “Jeopardy”) and chariot racing.
