A man trying to repossess a car was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday after he allegedly shot two unarmed brothers who confronted him, authorities said.

Gabriel and Maximilliano Salas of San Fernando were both shot once in the abdomen after the confrontation with Cass M. Cassillas, 24, of La Mirada, who worked for U. S. Recovery Service Inc. in Huntington Park, said Lt. Dan Peavy of the San Fernando Police Department. Both are expected to live.

A recovery service official refused to comment on the incident.

Maximilliano Salas, 26, was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he is listed in stable condition, a nursing supervisor said.

His brother, Gabriel, 20, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, but hospital officials declined to discuss his medical condition.

Police, responding to numerous 911 calls, arrived at the shooting scene in the 700 block of Hollister Street at 6:40 a.m., Peavy said.

“They were unarmed,” Peavy said of the brothers, who owned the car. “I believe there had been a confrontation, but to my knowledge no physical confrontation.”

Cassillas and recovery service employee Roger W. Boon, 24, of Pasadena were booked on suspicion of attempted murder, Peavy said. Peavy identified Cassillas as the man who fired the shots. Boon was later released. Cassillas’ bail was set at $1 million.

Repossession men are regulated under certain state laws, and they are not given carte blanche to use any and all methods to recover property, Peavy said.

“You are allowed to do anything you need to do to repossess the car as along as it’s peaceful,” said Mel Jones, who has worked in the auto recovery business in Los Angeles County for 16 years. “You can’t break and enter and if the owner comes out and says you can’t take my car, and it’s on his property, you have to leave it.”
