BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Tanana Has a Rough Start

Before Wednesday night’s outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, Angel Manager Buck Rodgers said he was “looking for results and control” from Frank Tanana, whose future with the Angels is very much in doubt.

Tanana gave up five hits and three runs in the first inning, then settled down and finished four innings of work, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Milwaukee won, 6-3.

“I was very encouraged by the last three innings,” Rodgers said. “I saw some good spin (on the curve) and a good changeup. The good stuff is starting to come and he wasn’t afraid to throw the ball over the plate. After the first, he was fooling some pretty good hitters.

“This one came under the heading of ‘Not Too Bad.’ ”

So Rodgers decided to give Tanana another look, probably on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs.

“A decision on Tanana will come pretty quickly after that,” Rodgers said.

Bo Jackson left his position in left field during the top of the seventh inning because of a cramp in his right calf. Jackson said it was nothing major, but “if you try to play on a cramp like that, you can pull something.” What did Rodgers think when he saw Jackson coming into toward the dugout? “About 15 things ran through my head, from the hip gave out to he’s going home because it’s past his bedtime.”

Outfielder Dwight Smith will make his Angel debut as a national anthem singer tonight when the Chicago Cubs come to Tempe Diablo Stadium for a second consecutive night game. “I’m always pumped for the national anthem,” said Smith, who sang the anthem on opening day for the Cubs last season. . . . The Angels will have two mascots this season, a large bear and a small one. A contest will be held to name the bears. Sorry, Yogi and Boo Boo are already taken.
