Falling “Star” Shines in Victory
After nearly falling early in the stretch, favored Dezibelle’s Star gathered herself and went on to win the $81,200 La Habra Stakes Thursday at Santa Anita.
Attempting to rally between horses under Gary Stevens, the 3-year-old Prospective Star filly was shut off when the hole closed. She got going again, though, and was able to beat 5-2 second choice Sophisticatedcielo by a length in 1:14 for the about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.
This was the third consecutive victory for the even-money favorite, who is owned by Gordon Molitor and trained by Jack Van Berg.
“I’ve never seen anything quite like that and I’ve dang sure never been on one that did she what she just did,” said Stevens.
Sophisticatedcielo finished a length in front of Ballerina Gal, then came Airistar, Dancing Ovation and Gambling Mistress.
