Man Arrested in String of Gas Station Heists
A 29-year-old Santa Ana man was arrested Saturday morning in connection with a string of Orange County gas station robberies in the last three weeks.
Authorities said that Darrell Mathew Ellis was first stopped in Anaheim by an Anaheim police officer and later arrested there by Fountain Valley police after they linked him to an armed robbery a week earlier at the Mobil gas station at Harbor Boulevard and Edinger Avenue.
A gas station attendant, who was robbed of more than $250, jotted down the license number on Ellis’ 1981 Honda. That number led investigators to Ellis, who police said is also suspected of robbing at least six other gas stations in Garden Grove, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach. Ellis was taken to the Huntington Beach City Jail.
