One streak ended for Cal State Northridge, but another began in Saturday’s Collegiate Classic track and field meet.

The Matadors finished second behind Utah State in the men’s meet, snapping their string of three consecutive victories in the meet, but won their second consecutive title on the women’s side.

Juniors Tannel House and Teresa Stricklin each won two events as Northridge (8-0) totaled 97 points. San Diego State finished second with 83 points, followed by Long Beach (71) and Cal State Fullerton (32). A group of athletes from the Japanese Sports Federation finished fifth with 22 points and USC placed sixth (15).

The Northridge men, led by double winner Joe Hicks, had 101 points--15 behind victorious Utah State.

USC placed third (94 points), followed by Cal State Fullerton (72), Cal State Long Beach (67), Weber State (21) and the Japanese Sports Federation (17).

“I’m really proud of what the kids accomplished,” Coach Don Strametz said. “We had several people who really came through for us.”

Strametz was particularly pleased with distance runners Alva Dancel and Lori Miller.

Dancel placed second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38 minutes 48.74 seconds in the morning and finished third in the 5,000 (18:23.45) in the afternoon.

Miller placed second in the 3,000 with a personal best of 10:28.38 and came back 35 minutes later to win the 1,500 in 4:42.24.

“To me, that’s a great strength double,” Strametz said.

House continued the best season of her Northridge career by winning the long jump (20 feet 1/4 inch) and triple jump (39-9 1/4).

The long jump mark tied her personal best and the triple jump effort improved her best by three-quarters of an inch.

“She’s having a great season,” Strametz said. “She’s really starting to get consistent at 20 feet in the long jump.”

Northridge scored 19 of 21 possible points in the weight events as Stricklin won the shotput (45-8) and discus (154-1), and Kristen Dunn finished second in the javelin (148-2).

Stricklin’s mark in the shotput and Dunn’s in the javelin were inferior to their performances in last year’s meet, but Strametz is not overly concerned.

“We’re still two to three weeks behind where we should be because of the (training time lost in the aftermath of the earthquake),” Strametz said. “Hopefully, we’ll be caught up by (the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in four weeks), but it could take longer than that.”

Hicks was victorious in the shotput (53-0 1/4) and the hammer (191-10) for the Northridge men’s team (7-2), which has been forced to compete without several key performers this season for a variety of reasons.

Derek Scurry, the Matador record-holder in the long jump (26-3 1/2), is academically ineligible.

Marc Harisay, who put the shot 58-1 3/4 last year, moved away in the wake of the earthquake, and Jason Stein, Northridge’s top performer in the 400 (48.14), recently moved to San Diego to pursue a career with the city’s police department.
