The Boston Bruins lost a wild game and perhaps their top scorer.

The New Jersey Devils showed they can win even when their NHL-best defense is having an off-day.

Stephane Richer, Bernie Nicholls and John MacLean each scored two goals as the Devils won at Boston, 8-6, Saturday in a game that included five fights and a penalty shot.

It also included the loss of Bruin winger Cam Neely, who has rebounded from a serious left knee injury to score 50 goals, but who hurt a ligament in his right knee Saturday and will undergo tests.

“Cam hurt his medial collateral in his right knee and will be assessed in the next couple of days,” Bruin Coach Brian Sutter said. “It doesn’t look real good right now.”

Winnipeg 4, Detroit 2--The Jets’ Tim Cheveldae outplayed Detroit’s Bob Essensa in a game at Winnipeg that involved two goaltenders recently traded for each other.

Cheveldae made 35 saves and Essensa looked shaky while making 17. They were traded 12 days ago.

Montreal 5, Quebec 2--The Canadiens dealt the Nordiques’ playoff hopes a blow at Montreal as Mathieu Schneider had two goals and two assists.

The Northeast Division-leading Canadiens extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games while ending Quebec’s seven-game unbeaten string.

The Nordiques lost a chance to gain on a possible playoff berth, staying in 11th place in the East and remaining six points behind eighth-place Florida with 13 games to play.

Pittsburgh 5, Vancouver 4--Martin Straka’s 30th goal of the season, at 6:03 of the third period, broke a 3-3 tie and led the Penguins at Pittsburgh, where they are 5-2-2 in their last nine games.

Hartford 5, Philadelphia 3--Jocelyn Lemieux scored his second goal with 47 seconds to play to break a tie at Philadelphia.

Brian Propp scored an empty-net goal with 1.7 seconds remaining for his 1,000th NHL point.
