SIERRA MADRE : Body of Boy Swept Away on Hike With Father Found

Share

After 15 days of digging out a mud-filled catch basin, workers Monday uncovered the body of a 9-year-old Sierra Madre boy who died with his father when a flash flood inundated the canyon where they were hiking.

The grim discovery ends the search that began March 6 when John Henderson, 33, and his son, Matthew, were reported missing after a 15-foot wall of muddy water roared down Bailey Canyon in Sierra Madre. John Henderson’s body was found last week.

“We’re just extremely glad it’s over,” said George Henderson Jr., John’s brother. “We really want to move on and put this behind us.”

Workers with the county Public Works Department also were relieved.

“It was really hard coming out here every day, digging it out a little bit at a time, always looking,” said bulldozer operator Larry Davis.
