Pair Arrested in Assault, Car Theft
A man resisting a car thief was pistol-whipped Tuesday, which left him bruised but still able to identify two suspects 20 minutes later when police arrested them.
Salvador Salcedo of Huntington Beach told police he saw a man and woman trying to steal his 1979 Chevrolet Caprice in the 7500 block of Slater Avenue at about 1:50 p.m.
When he confronted them, the man struck Salcedo in the head with a pistol and fled in Salcedo’s car with the woman, Sgt. Dennis Martin said.
Police chased the car north on the San Diego Freeway, stopping it at the junction with the Garden Grove Freeway in Seal Beach.
Police identified the suspects as Marcus Barnhardt, 24, of Long Beach, and Mirian Daugherty, 34, of Bellflower. They were arrested on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft auto, and were being held at Huntington Beach Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail each.
Salcedo was not seriously injured, Martin said, and identified the two suspects.
