SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two Lancaster men are being sought in connection with a double slaying at an apartment complex here.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators said Terry Tyrone Evans, 18, and state prison parolee Harry Jackson Boyd, 26, knew the man and woman they are accused of murdering in a bungled robbery attempt. Charges of first-degree murder and robbery were filed against Evans and Boyd and warrants were issued Tuesday for their arrests.

The incident began in a parked car early on the morning of March 1 at Antelope Valley Apartments in the 43400 block of 32nd Street West. Ronald Greene, 22, of Upland was shot once in the back of the head while Latonya Walker, 23, of Ontario was shot in the hand, upper body and head.

Before the shooting, Evans and Boyd were sitting in the back seat of the victims’ car, said Deputy Patrick Hauser. “Without warning, Evans shot Greene once in the head with a semiautomatic pistol.”

Homicide Bureau Lt. Ray Peavy said Evans probably shot Greene because Greene also had a gun. “Their intent from the beginning was to rob (Greene),” Peavy said. “Their intent was to shoot him so there would be no chance for them to get shot.”

Evans and Boyd never got any money, Peavy said. Despite their quick search of Greene’s body for cash, they did not find anything, Peavy said.

Investigators, however, found $4,500 in cash hidden in Greene’s clothing, although, Hauser said, it was later determined that more than $4,000 was counterfeit.

Earlier this month, a coroner’s investigator was sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading no contest to a charge that she stole some of the counterfeit money from Greene’s body. Candi Lea Culberson resigned from the coroner’s office after admitting that she stole the money.

It was the money that brought Evans and Boyd together with the two they are accused of killing. Greene and Walker picked up their suspected killers after Greene “flashed a large amount of cash and indicated he had $8,000,” Peavy said.

After Evans shot Greene, his gun jammed, Hauser said. Walker, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, fled from the car but was chased and held by Boyd about 15 feet away from the car.

Evans then took Greene’s handgun from the front of the car and walked over to Walker. “As Walker pleaded for her life, (Evans) fired three shots at her,” Hauser said.

He added, “Evans put the gun on the ground and walked with Boyd to a waiting car driven by a third man.”

Peavy said the third man is not being sought.

Boyd was released from prison less than two months before the shooting, according to the state Department of Corrections. Boyd’s prison record dates back to 1987 when he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for oral sex with a child under 14.

In 1990 he was convicted on a charge of possession of a controlled substance for sale, according to the Corrections Department. After serving 10 months in prison, Boyd was paroled.

Boyd was twice returned to prison for parole violations. In January, 1992, he served additional time on a variety of charges.
