PACOIMA : Plaza Swap Meet to Hold Open House

Share

The Fiesta Plaza swap meet in Pacoima will hold an open house April 7 to welcome two community organizations now working out of the center.

The event will introduce the Northeast Valley Health Corp.’s Substance Abuse Division, and Woman, Infant and Children (WIC), a nutrition program. Both moved into the plaza at 12800 Foothill Blvd. on March 1, spokesman Joe Ortiz said.

Developer Steve Brown, who has owned the 60,000-square-foot plaza for two years, actively recruited government and social service organizations to move into the plaza last year as part of his one-stop shopping plan.

The focus of Brown’s plan is to lure shoppers into the plaza by making it a center for social services. Brown has invested more than $1 million in the struggling plaza, and much of its space is still unoccupied.

Brown also is trying to persuade English as a Second Language centers, food stamp and employment offices to lease space in the plaza, which he says he wants to turn into the “Olvera Street of the San Fernando Valley.”

Councilman Richard Alarcon and a host of community leaders are expected to attend the April 7 event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, Ortiz said.
