Authorities were still searching for a motive Monday into a shooting that left two people dead and two others--including a teen-age girl--critically wounded at a Monterey Park restaurant.

Deputies arrived at the Cafe Mirage, a Chinese restaurant and karaoke bar, about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and found Cuong Van Ly, 20, of Monterey Park dead at the scene, said Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Diane Hecht.

Eric Namtu Trang, 31, also of Monterey Park, was taken to Monterey Park Hospital, where he died of gunshot wounds, Hecht said.

Vincent Fong, 31, of Monterey Park, and Ahn Lee Dan, 16, of Upland are in critical condition at area hospitals.

Hect said an argument preceded the shootings at the cafe in the Monterey Park Mall in the 400 block of South Atlantic Boulevard, an area not known for serious crime.

“Several patrons at the restaurant started arguing, it escalated into a fistfight and then one person started brandishing a handgun,” Hecht said. “What started the fight is unknown.”

Police arrested a suspect, but he was released after questioning. No other arrests have been made.
