America West Cuts Fares; Others Join In
America West Airlines said Thursday it is cutting advance-purchase fares on some flights by nearly a third, and most other major airlines followed suit in the latest round of fare sales.
America West’s announcement followed moves earlier in the week by major carriers to expand an air fare sale.
United, TWA, USAir and American said they will match America West’s rates and times in overlapping markets. Bill Gatman, a Delta marketing representative, said his airline was studying America West’s move.
The America West discounts require a 14-day advance purchase and a Saturday night stay. Tickets must be bought by April 27 for travel through July 31.
Some examples: New York-San Jose, $458 round trip, down from the full fare of $674; Seattle-Dallas, $388, down from $558; Minneapolis-Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, $418, down from $543.
America West’s most recent sale, similar to the new one but different in details, was announced Feb. 28 and expired on Thursday, as did the other major airlines’ previous reductions.
The airline has 16 flights a day at John Wayne Airport.
