LOS ANGELES : United Way Gives $318,306 to 31 Groups for Quake Aid
The United Way of Greater Los Angeles gave out a total of $318,306 in grants this week to 31 Southland agencies that provide services to quake victims, it was announced Friday.
Spokesman Herbert Carter said the umbrella charitable organization is dedicating all of the donations received by its earthquake relief fund to agencies that are helping residents who suffered losses in January’s quake.
This week’s grants bring the total distributed through the fund to nearly $1.2 million, said Kenneth Murphy, chairman of the local United Way’s board of directors.
The money went to support 71 community service organizations in the Los Angeles area and in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, Murphy said. The largest grant went to the Salvation Army, which was given $40,000 to continue its general quake-related relief services, he said. Catholic Charities received $30,000 for its outreach and counseling services.
