A teen-age driver died Saturday two hours after his silver Pontiac Firebird skidded across a road divider and collided with another car on MacArthur Boulevard.

Two other people were also injured in the crash, which happened about 10:30 a.m. near an off-ramp of the Corona del Mar Freeway. Irvine police said passing motorists tried to revive Michael A. Bonomo, 18, the Pontiac driver, but he died later at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana from head and chest injuries.

According to police, Bonomo was apparently speeding when he exited the freeway off-ramp to MacArthur Boulevard. At that point, they said, he lost control, bouncing across the center divider from the south to the northbound lane of MacArthur. There, the car was struck from the rear by a white 1987 Nissan sedan driven by Jon Schisler, 27, of Costa Mesa.

Schisler suffered severe head and chest injuries and was taken to UCI Medical Center for treatment. His 27-year-old wife, Shaun--who was a passenger in the front seat--was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo for treatment of bone fractures.

Both directions of MacArthur Boulevard were closed to traffic from Jamboree Street to the Corona del Mar Freeway ramp for nearly six hours while police investigated the accident.
