A suspected arson fire swept through a two-story apartment building and a duplex in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, forcing 29 people out of their homes.

The fire started about 3 a.m. in a car inside a garage. “It looks like somebody torched the car,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

The fire quickly spread through the occupied building to the empty duplex next door on South Orchard Avenue, Collis said.

Fifty-five firefighters battled the blaze, which was extinguished in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross issued motel vouchers to all 29 displaced people and plans to help the families relocate if necessary.
