COLLEGE BASKETBALL / DAILY REPORT : NCAA MEN : It Could Be Three Times as Historical

Share

Only 13 players in NCAA history have won three national championships and they are all from UCLA. Larry Farmer was last to do it, from 1971-73.

Duke seniors Grant Hill, Antonio Lang and Marty Clark could do it tonight.

Last time they met, Arkansas defeated Duke, 98-88, in a preseason National Invitation Tournament game at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 21, 1990. Hill had 12 points in that game, Lang four off the bench and Clark did not play. Arkansas has no holdovers from that squad.

If Clark goes to the free-throw line, go get a sandwich. He’ll still be there when you get back.

After getting the ball from the official, Clark dribbles 10 to 20 times, takes a deep breath, then dribbles three more times before shooting.

He has made 50 of 59 this season, nearly 85%.

Stan Campbell, Charlotte city council member, on the long lines caused by security concerns over President Clinton’s visit:

“Arkansas’ team motto is ’40 minutes of hell.’ Most people had 40 minutes of hell getting through those metal detectors.”

“Herrick Is Going to the Final 4!” screamed the newspaper ad.

A reader named Mark Herrick had won the Charlotte newspaper’s contest for tournament tickets.
