TOUGH JOB: Mary Lee must be crazy....

TOUGH JOB: Mary Lee must be crazy. Why else would she leave her secure position as president of Valley College for the same job at Pierce? The place is deep in debt, and losing students. Besides, there’s no guarantee she’ll be able to stay beyond two years. . . . The answer is simple. Lee loves a challenge, and she’s certainly got one. Times staff writer John Chandler interviewed her about her plans for Pierce (B5).

NOISES OFF: If you were stoked to see “Burbank Airport, The Meeting” on your TV, tough luck. It’s canceled without even a pilot. The powers that be at Burbank Airport scrapped the idea of broadcasting their meetings (B5) . . . Bad light and takeoff noise would make the show hard to watch, they said--and that runway roar might become a weapon in the hands of the airport’s vociferous noise critics.

WAITING: The quake was supposed to mean good business for Valley companies (above) that do repairs. But, so far, it hasn’t worked out that way for everyone. Blame it on the long waits for federal aid and insurance money. . . . “It’s frustrating,” said the owner of a Reseda company, “because I’m out there spinning my wheels.” See Valley Business, Page 3.

AIDS AWARENESS: At first, some feared an AIDS education program held last month by the Sulphur Springs School District in Santa Clarita might be too graphic. But a survey released Monday indicates it should help open a dialogue between parents and children about the problem. . . . “This program should be mandatory for all kids in the school,” wrote one parent (B14).

MIGHTY MATADOR: Golf will take center stage this weekend with the Masters. And although ex-CSUN player Bob Burns won’t compete, he’s already made quite an impression on the PGA Tour this season. He’s pocketed more than $90,000, and might win Rookie of the Year. . . . Ex-coach Jim Bracken is not surprised. “I knew it was just a matter of time,” he said. “He’s just a great ball striker, and is so consistent.”
