A Navy attack plane crashed into San Francisco Bay within sight of the Bay Bridge on Tuesday, killing the two Navy reserve fliers aboard, officials said.

The A-6 Intruder was practicing touch-and-go landings at Alameda Naval Air Station shortly before noon when it plunged into the water about a mile west of the air station.

It crashed about a mile from the bridge, which links San Francisco and Oakland, Coast Guard Petty Officer Gene Maestas said.

A small craft pulled the two aviators from the water and a Coast Guard cutter picked them up and took them to Yerba Buena Island, where they were pronounced dead by paramedics. The island, in the middle of the bay, links the two sections of the bridge.

The victims were identified as Lt. Randall E. McNally II, 33, of San Antonio, Tex., and Lt. Cmdr. Brian R. McMahon, 34, of Portland, Ore.
