Somebody needs to show rookie Carlos Delgado the front doors of the restaurants inside Toronto’s SkyDome.

He keeps trying to get in the hard way.

Delgado homered off a window of Windows resturant Tuesday night to help the Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-3. The shot, off Alex Fernandez in the second inning, was estimated at 445 feet.

That was seven feet longer than the homer Delgado hit off the Hard Rock Cafe in right field on Monday.

“It was one of those swings that, when you make contact, you don’t feel anything in your hands,” Delgado said. “It was the same thing (Monday), but this one went, maybe, a bit longer.”

Paul Molitor doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Joe Carter homered in the eighth in support of Dave Stewart (1-0).

Todd Stottlemyre got his first major league save. He is pitching in relief because bullpen stopper Duane Ward is on the disabled list.

Milwaukee 11, Oakland 7--Wearing three sweatshirts under his uniform in the 31 degrees of Milwaukee’s coldest home opener ever, Alex Diaz drove in three runs, all with two outs, for the Brewers.

Billy Spiers drove in two on a day that began with snow, and included rock salt on County Stadium ramps to keep fans from slipping and 29-m.p.h. winds.

The previous record cold for a Milwaukee opener had been 33 degrees.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

New York Mets 6, Chicago Cubs 2--Pete Smith (1-0) pitched seven strong innings in his Met debut and New York won at Chicago for the second consecutive day.

Kelly Stinnett, with his first major league hit, and Jeff Kent each had two-run doubles during a five-run third inning.

The Mets also won their first two games last season, against Colorado, before going 59-103 for the worst record in the majors.

Smith, traded from Atlanta in November for outfielder Dave Gallagher, gave up two runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Jose Guzman (0-1) lasted only 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on three hits and five walks.

San Francisco 2, Pittsburgh 0--Bill Swift limited the Pirates to three hits in seven innings in the Giants’ second consecutive shutout at San Francisco.

Mike Jackson pitched the eighth and Rod Beck closed the ninth for a save.

Pittsburgh left-hander Steve Cooke (0-1) allowed only three hits until the sixth inning, when Willie McGee led off with a single, went to third on Barry Bonds’ single and scored on Todd Benzinger’s sacrifice fly.

“I’ve never seen back-to-back shutouts” to open a season, Giants Manager Dusty Baker said. “These guys came out of spring training ready.”

Following a six-hit shutout by John Burkett and two relievers, Swift was certainly ready. The right-hander, who won 21 games last year, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Fifty of his 75 pitches went for strikes.

*

Montreal 5, Houston 1--Larry Walker hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, leading the Expos past Doug Drabek and the Astros at Houston.

Ken Hill (1-0) gave up six hits in six innings, and three Montreal pitchers finished with shutout relief.

Atlanta 5, San Diego 1--Tom Glavine baffled the Padres, giving up two hits in seven inning while striking out nine as the Braves won their second in a row at San Diego.

Rookies Ryan Klesko and Javier Lopez homered as the Braves pounded five Padres pitchers for 14 hits. Lopez went three for five with two RBIs, and Jeff Blauser went three for five.

Glavine (1-0) had seven strikeouts before San Diego got its first hit, a single by Derek Bell with one out in the fourth inning. Glavine struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and finished with only two walks.

Mark Wohlers pitched a hitless eighth inning, but Steve Bedrosian, who came on in the ninth, was touched for San Diego’s lone run.

Klesko, who hit a leadoff homer in the sixth inning of Monday’s season-opener, connected on a 3-and-2 pitch from Wally Whitehurst (0-1) with two outs in the first inning.
