He Comes for a Trout and Leaves With Record
John Masek got a clue when the “tree” began to swim.
“At first, I thought I had snagged an underwater tree,” Masek said. “But after a few seconds, the fish began to fight. I had no idea what was on the end of the line. Then, when I finally saw it, I couldn’t believe it.”
What Masek, of Mission Viejo, had on the end of the line was an Irvine Lake-record rainbow trout, which tipped the scale at 18 pounds 2 ounces. The fish, caught on a chrome Kastmaster lure, eclipsed the previous record by 3 1/2 pounds.
