Saddleback went on a hitting terror last week in the Buckman-Mitchell baseball tournament in Visalia, and Wilkes led the way. The Gauchos outscored opponents, 43-14, in four games. Wilkes, selected the tournament’s most valuable player, was six of 16, scored five runs and drove in 10. Wilkes, from Laguna Hills High, had three home runs, including one in the title game, a 15-7 victory over DeAnza College. His performance raised his average 23 points to .253. He has five home runs and is tied for the lead in runs batted in with 23.

Other notables:

* Richard Ernst, Orange Coast, had seven hits, including a home run and a triple, as the Pirates split four games in the Visalia tournament.

* Paul Graham, Fullerton, pitched a three-hitter as the Hornets beat Fresno, 11-1, in title game of the Hornet Hardball Classic.

Kristen Varagne

Softball / Pitcher

Varagne has spent much of the season in the shadow of Kelsi Armbruster, the Pirates’ top pitcher. But last week in the College of the Desert tournament, she stepped to the front, winning three games as the Pirates finished second. Varagne, a sophomore from Pacifica High, got two victories over Antelope Valley. One was in relief of Armbruster. The second was a one-hitter that OCC won, 4-1. She also beat San Diego Mesa, 7-1. Varagne allowed two runs and eight hits in 18 innings for OCC.

Other notables:

* Christina Mazurie, Rancho Santiago, had six hits in four games as the Dons finished second in the Fullerton softball tournament.

* Kerry Moloney, Cypress, had 13 hits and drove in three runs as Cypress won five of nine games in two tournaments.
