A Sampler for Those With a Taste for a Night on the Town

The Junior Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Fullerton will hold its 15th annual “Taste of the Town” on Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Brea Mall. Area restaurants and caterers--including Brea Bistro, Giovanni’s of Fullerton, Portofino’s of La Habra and Le Diplomat Cafe of Brea--are donating specialties to sample.

Tickets are $40 per person for unlimited food, beer and wine; all proceeds of ticket sales benefit the Assistance League. Cocktail attire.

The OrangeAid Kitchen, a project of area chefs to benefit the Share Our Selves homeless shelter in Costa Mesa, will hold a party tonight to celebrate the renovation of the kitchen. The evening is also a salute to the 17 participating chefs in the annual Kitchen-Aid fund-raiser for SOS, which is April 22.

Tonight’s event, from 6 to 9, is free and open to the public and includes food and drink. Tickets will be on sale for the April 22 fund-raiser, at $25 per person.

Among the chefs participating in both events are Michael Kang of Five Feet, Alan Greeley of the Golden Truffle, Claude Koeberle of the Ritz and John McLaughlin of J.W.’s in the Anaheim Marriott.

Carmelo’s Ristorante will transform itself into a classroom on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. while students from Corona del Mar High School hold a fund-raiser for their school. The high-schoolers will greet customers, take orders, serve the food and provide entertainment. The students will be assisting the restaurant’s chefs a little in the kitchen, too.

Proceeds, after costs, will benefit the school; estimates place that amount at as much as 50% of customers’ bills.

Through May 1, Prego Ristorante is celebrating spring with a Festa della Primavera, a selection of Italian dishes featuring fresh herbs, vegetables, grilled meats and light fruit desserts.

Among the menu items are calamaretti all’origano (grilled squid served on a bed of spinach) for $14.50 and insalata mare e monti (a salad of lightly sauteed scallops with porcini mushrooms) for $8.50.
