OOOOPS: Somebody made a big mistake, but democracy will survive. It seems more than 2,000 voters in Lancaster and Palmdale were left off the rolls, but the error was caught and they’ll be able to vote in Tuesday’s local election. . . . County officials and the cities were working Friday to get sample ballots to the voters as quickly as possible (B18).

BEER HISTORY: Who says we are having trade problems with Japan? Certainly nobody at the Van Nuys Anheuser-Busch plant, and with good reason. That’s because the first Japanese beer ever manufactured in the U.S. for large-scale sale in Japan rolled off the assembly line Friday. . . . The beer was even blessed by a Shinto Priest (B1).

WORD PROBLEM: For years, the massacre of 6 million Jews in World War II has been called “the Holocaust.” But some scholars argue another word is needed. . . . Zev Garber (above), chairman of Jewish studies at Valley College, says its literal meaning refers to burnt offerings in ritual sacrifices. “It makes the 6 million Jews an offering to God, and the priests are the Nazis,” he said (B1).

ARCADIA TO ATLANTA: The Valley, as usual, will send its best high school athletes to tonight’s Arcadia Invitational track and field meet at Arcadia High (C14). . . . Who knows? Today, Arcadia. Tomorrow, Atlanta and the 1996 Olympics. It’s happened before. Olympic medalists Gail Devers, Mike Powell, Quincy Watts and Valerie Brisco all competed at the Arcadia meet, which began in 1968 without much fanfare.
