BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Rally Beats Buena Park

With two on and the score tied, 2-2, late in the seventh inning, third baseman Robert Echavarria singled in the winning run to give Fullerton a 3-2 victory over Buena Park in a Freeway League baseball game Friday.

Ryan Schatz tied the score with a double in the beginning of the seventh inning. The fifth-ranked Indians remain undefeated in league play (13-2, 5-0).

In other Freeway League games:

Sonora 8, La Habra 5--Joey Gomez hit a two-run double to key a seven-run Sonora rally in the second, and he also homered in the fourth for host Sonora (7-8, 1-4). Jeremy Payne homered for La Habra (0-5 in league).

Troy 6, Sunny Hills 2--Nic Ruzzi had a single, double and triple and drove in four runs for visiting Troy (10-4, 3-2). Kevin Gray (5-2) pitched a five-hitter, striking out five for the third-ranked Warriors.

In the Century League:

Foothill 8, El Modena 3--Kevin Daft had a double, two RBIs and scored two runs and Erik Eidenmuller added two hits and two RBIs to lead Foothill (8-7, 4-1).

Santa Ana Valley 3, Orange 2--Rudy Noriega saved the game for the Falcons after making a diving catch in the bottom of the seventh inning with two on. Santa Ana Valley is 8-7, 3-2.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 12, Magnolia 7--Jason Theis hit his second home run of the season with one on in the sixth inning to spark Brea-Olinda’s nine-run inning. Matt Weyant was four for four and had two RBIs for the Wildcats (13-2, 3-2).

Savanna 4, Anaheim 3 (8)--Jose Vasquez struck out seven and allowed one hit in 7 2/3 innings to lead Savanna (5-9, 2-3). Steve Brunner had three RBIs, including the game-winner in the eighth inning for Savanna. Vasquez improved to 2-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 8, Laguna Beach 5--Jose Cabrerra pitched a complete game and Peter Bergman had two hits, including a triple for Estancia (6-7, 2-3).

Trabuco Hills 12, Costa Mesa 0--Brad Cervantes hit his third home run of the season for Trabuco Hills (10-5, 5-0).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 2, Saddleback 1--Daniel MacMillan won the dual of pitchers in Corona del Mar’s victory. MacMillan struck out nine and gave up four hits; Saddleback’s Tony Zuniga struck out 12 and gave up three hits. Myles Davis scored the winning run off a Jeff Bowman suicide squeeze bunt in the third inning for the Sea Kings (12-3, 3-1).

In the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam Tournament in Phoenix:

Tustin 22, Cookeville (Tenn.) 4 (5, mercy)--Second baseman Ryan Winmill hit a grand slam in the third inning to lead Tustin (12-3). Matt Turjillo hit a two-run home run in the beginning of the second inning to spark Tustin’s scoring drive. Danny Lagafuaina was two for two with three RBIs. Tustin will face Carson City (Nev.) in the semifinals at noon today.

In consolations of the tournament:

Calvary Chapel 17, San Jose Santa Teresa 8--Joe Jones had three hits and four RBIs and Ryan Elliott added two hits and three RBIs to lead Calvary Chapel (9-4). Calvary Chapel will face La Puente Bishop Amat in the semifinals at 4 p.m. today.

In the San Luis Obispo Tiger softball tournament:

La Quinta 7, San Luis Obispo 0--Kelly McLaughlin struck out eight and gave up two hits over seven innings to lead La Quinta (8-4) in the quarterfinals. Veronica Carillo had two hits and scored twice for the Aztecs.

Jennifer Hollinger struck out eight and gave up one hit for La Quinta in a 7-0 victory over San Jose Mission in the first round. Michelle Weld had three hits, scored three runs and had one RBI in the tournament opener. La Quinta will face Morro Bay in the semifinals at 10 a.m. today.

In nonleague baseball:

Heritage Christian 12, Canoga Park Coutin 1 (6, mercy)--Steve Acheson had four RBIs and went three for three, including a home run and a triple to lead Heritage Christian (3-4). Eric Carreon went two for three, including one RBI for Heritage Christian.

Southern California Christian 11, Tri-City Christian 5--Boomer Felton had two triples, drove in two runs, scored two runs and stole two bases for visiting SCC (7-2-1).
