COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Windmiller’s 2-Hitter Gets Northridge Split

Amy Windmiller pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven as Cal State Northridge softball team defeated New Mexico, 10-0, to salvage a split in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against New Mexico on Friday at Northridge.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Windmiller (16-1) allowed only one runner to reach second base. Tamara Ivie went three for three with three runs, three runs batted in and belted her fourth home run. Vicky Rios and Shelby Wilcox each had two hits.

The Matadors (28-6, 5-2 in conference play) lost the first game, 2-1, when two errors in the third inning led to two unearned runs against junior right-hander Kathy Blake (9-5), who has lost four of her last five starts.

Beth Calcante’s third home run in the sixth accounted for the Matador run.

In another softball game:

Ventura 1, Pierce 0--Blanca Lozano pitched her first no-hitter of the season and Javonda Thompson hit her second home run for the Pirates (14-14, 4-2) in the Western State Conference game at Ventura.

Lozano, who struck out two batters, had a perfect game through three innings, but issued her only walk of the game to start the fourth.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UCLA d. CS Northridge, 15-10, 15-3, 15-4--Four starters had double figures in kills to lead the top-ranked Bruins in the first round of the UCLA Tournament.

Oliver Heitmann had a game-high 17 kills to lead the Matadors (14-9) but Northridge committed 26 errors in the match, compared with 11 for UCLA (21-1).

Jason Hughes had 10 kills and Peter Piexoto had nine for the Matadors.

BASEBALL

Moorpark 2, Oxnard 1--Jason Young singled home Jim Seguine from second base with two out in the 12th inning, lifting Oxnard (12-14, 6-6) to a WSC victory.

Sophomore right-hander Joey Vargas (3-4) went the distance, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking one. Moorpark starter Jeff Naster got no decision despite pitching 11 innings, striking out four.

Seguine was two for two. Kevin Nykoluk went three for five for Moorpark (6-5 in league).

Desert 15, Antelope Valley 10--The Marauders, who often score in double digits, committed six errors that led to eight unearned runs in a Foothill Conference defeat at Lancaster.

Jack Cox had two doubles for Antelope Valley (11-10, 5-7).
