NHL ROUNDUP : Flames Defeat Red Wings, 4-2, to Keep Hopes Alive in West

Sandy McCarthy and Ron Stern, better known for their time in the penalty box, scored Saturday for the Flames, who hung on for a 4-2 victory over Detroit at Calgary and retained a slim chance of overtaking the Red Wings for the Western Conference championship.

Calgary has 95 points, three behind the Red Wings. Each team has three games to play.

James Patrick and Mike Sullivan also scored for Calgary.

It was McCarthy’s first goal since Dec. 30 and Stern’s first since Jan. 24. The two have more than 400 penalty minutes.

Detroit’s Keith Primeau scored twice in the third period.

Tampa Bay 3, Boston 0--Wendel Young stopped 32 shots for his first shutout in four seasons as the Lightning, which won’t be in the playoffs, won at Boston to complete an 11-day sweep of Buffalo, Montreal and the Bruins, the three teams fighting for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and home ice in the first round.

Washington 8, Ottawa 4--Todd Krygier scored three goals and the Capitals moved within a point of wrapping up a playoff berth at Landover, Md.

Montreal 9, Pittsburgh 1--Gary Leeman had two goals and two assists for the Canadiens at home as they broke a five-game winless streak (0-4-1).
