The Splash, Anaheim’s new entry in the Continental Indoor Soccer League, selected Fullerton resident Phillip Gyau with its first pick in Wednesday’s league draft in Washington, D.C.

Gyau, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound forward, was most valuable player of the American Professional Soccer League in 1990 but has no indoor pro experience. The Splash selected him 38th overall.

The Splash used their other pick, in the 10th round, for defender Denis Hamlett, a member of the Harrisburg Heat of the indoor National Professional Soccer League.

With three other picks, the Splash protected three members of the old L.A. United, which played in the CISL last year and was sold to the group that created the Splash. The players are former UCLA midfielder Sam George, forward Raffaele Ruotolo--the United’s leading scorer last season with 24 goals in 19 games--and forward Bobby Reyes.

The first pick overall by the Las Vegas Dust was Branko Segota, all-time leading scorer for the San Diego Sockers of the old Major Soccer League.

The Splash begins play June 10 at The Pond of Anaheim.
